Madagascar 3 is in development for next summer, but I'm amazed that they didn't just skip it and move forward with this project instead. Given the ridiculous popularity of the Madagascar penguins, I'm amazed this hasn't happened sooner. Unlike the show, which has a whole bunch of penguins, the new film will focus only on Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico (though it's unknown who will be providing the voices). Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, the writers of last year's Megamind, have been hired to write the script, which was fast-tracked back in March. The film is not the first time the penguins have been thrust into the spotlight, as the scene-stealers have their own show on Nickelodeon called The Penguins of Madagascar, and multiple direct-to-DVD releases. Despite the R rating, this is definitely a hard NC-17 on the ranks of western animation like Goodfellas. My only real nitpicks are that the story can sometimes get a little too complex and the homophobia is unnecessary, especially the gay rapist character. Also, my favorite scenes are when Patrick Warburton appears as Ken, a honey addict. In his first appearance he literally smashes a Governor's teeth out and forces them down his throat. Jerry Seinfeld and Matthew Broderick are well-developed as the main leads, Renee Zellweger is decent as Vanessa, and John Goodman is top-notch in his villainous role. Whether it's moments where bees would beautifully fly over the ocean, intense action including the famous "California Bombing" scene that will make you cry, or the creative production of honey. Also with the artistic direction of Hayao Miyazaki, you will receive some of the most breathtaking visuals you will ever see.
